Crusaders Fall in Double Overtime, 1-0

Sept. 3, 2004

Durham, N.H. - A penalty kick by Tony Anderson in the second overtime gave the University of Vermont a 1-0 win over Holy Cross in the opening round of the men's soccer Nike Fall Soccer Classic at UNH's Lewis Field on Friday afternoon.

After a hard foul on Vermont's Devin Bitsack inside the box, the penalty kick was awarded. Anderson's drive to the upper left corner of the net beat Crusaders' goalie Richard Whipple in the 104th minute of a hard-fought game that was the season opener for both squads.

The Crusaders had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks but were unable to mount a consistent attack.

Anderson's game-winner stopped a seven-game winless streak in overtime games for the Catamounts who went 0-1-5 in extra time last season.

Vermont goalkeeper David Sullivan made five stops in posting the 14th shutout of his career. Whipple also made five saves in net for Holy Cross.

The Crusaders will take on host UNH Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
