Holy Cross Tops Maine, 1-0

Oct. 26, 2004

Portland, Me. - Freshman Marsalis Beckford (Branford, Ontario) scored in the 42nd minute to lead the Holy Cross men's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference win over the University of Maine on Tuesday night at Falmouth High School. Holy Cross improves to 7-5-1, while the Black Bears drop to 4-7-3.

After 41 minutes of scoreless play, the Crusaders got on the board when a Maine defender attempted to clear the ball inside the 18-yard line, and played it to Beckford's foot. The freshman forward settled the ball and beat Maine keeper Chad Mongeon for the eventual game-winner.

The Black Bears outshot the visiting Crusaders 7 to 1 in the second stanza, but Holy Cross keeper Richard Whipple (Columbus, Ga.) made six saves for his fifth shutout victory of the season.

Holy Cross travels to Colgate on Saturday, October 30, for a 7:00 p.m. Patriot League matchup.
